I have been preparing for my YouTube debut for a long time. The title of my memorable first video is ‘How to Make Brown Rice Porridge.’ Have you ever been recommended brown rice for its health benefits? This video covers both the pros and cons, and includes instructions on how to handle brown rice, which can be a bit tricky. The content is equivalent to a paid lesson (about one macrobiotic cooking class). Please watch it at your convenience via the embedded link below. (Approximately 7-minute video.)
How to Picking Out Brown Rice
When you buy brown rice, first check for any black grains. In macrobiotics, this is called ‘picking out.’ While white rice is probably sorted by color by machines, you need to picking out brown rice with your own eyes. Among the photos below, please remove the black brown rice surrounded by a circle, as it is damaged. The unripe green grains surrounded by a triangle and the broken grains enclosed in a square are fine to eat.

Measuring Brown Rice
For this brown rice porridge, I measure 50cc per serving. After washing, add 500ml of water. These, along with salt, are the minimum required ingredients.

Washing Brown Rice
This is also called ‘polishing,’ but you rub and wash it. In my case, as shown in the photo below, I rub it against a metal colander to scratch the surface. This is to improve water absorption.

Soaking Brown Rice
Add 500ml of water and soak for at least 10 hours. The left photo shows immediately after adding water, and the right photo shows after soaking for more than 10 hours.

Cooking Brown Rice
Cook on high heat until boiling, then reduce to low heat. After 30 minutes on low heat, firm porridge is ready. If you chew well like me, this is perfect. If you prefer softer porridge, cook for an hour. Stir from the bottom of the pot with a spoon every 2-3 minutes to prevent scorching.

Ingredients and Toppings
Broccoli and eggs are recommended ingredients. Add them at your preferred timing. Season with salt, and pickled plum (umeboshi) if you like. Finally, I sprinkle black sesame seeds as a topping.

About Hanazumari Channel
As you can see, the videos on Hanazumari Channel are created by flipping through still images, mainly photos, like a book, with added audio. As a book lover, I concluded that this style of video would be best. We are now in an era where AI can generate three-dimensional characters with just a single prompt. However, generating beautiful three-dimensional characters often requires a paid version of AI, and generating such characters inevitably makes the video heavier and editing more time-consuming, which would take too long on my current computer. Therefore, I decided to stick to 2D. If you like it, please subscribe to the channel.
